Due to the playful nature of OTTers, OTC-related games have become a popular pastime within the Time fandom and even beyond.

Games Created by OTTers[]

Some forum users have created and played games that are OTC-related and/or have found some popularity among fellow OTTers.

In-Thread Games[]

  • OSH (OTTer Scavenger Hunt in Time): A small portion of a newpix is posted, usually a single character or object from Time.  Other players guess which newpix the piece is from.
  • Telephone Pictionary: OTTers alternate posting sentences and pictures in an artistic version of the telephone game.  The latest post is here.

The One True Puzzle

Part 1: Sudoku-Style Grid (underdetermined)

OTTdoku2

This became part one of a multi-part puzzle because I could not find a way to meet my three design goals simultaneously: 1) use letters to spell things; 2) lay them out symmetrically; 3) create a sudoku that required more than basic solving techniques. I had found many decent puzzles based on this starting grid, but none were symmetrical, and many symmetrical ones, but none of them were very hard. I decided to select my favorite one, post the part of it that met the first two goals, and use another puzzle to show how to fill in the remaining (asymmetrical) clues.

Part 2: Cryptogram

OTTdoku2pt2

All we have here is a cryptogram. It is a verse I wrote using only the nine available letters from the sudoku grid, as inspired by mathrec's puzzles. I played with the layout in a silly way, which I knew would hamper solving but which I hoped would enhance enjoyment afterward. I figured the added difficulty would be balanced out once it was figured out there were only nine letters to choose from for the solution map. The code block/image format is meant to convey that whitespace is significant. Figuring that out is essential to finding the words and the spaces between.

Part 3: Encoded Instructions to Complete Sudoku Grid Clues

(2,9) = l
(3,3) = n
(4,1) = y
(4,5) = c
(6,1) = c
(7,7) = u
(8,5) = l
(8,9) = s

These are coordinates and letters for putting the rest of the clues into the grid and making the sudoku solvable. This became a puzzle when I decided to post no instructions. I had intended to define the coordinate system, which would have made this part straightforward, but this way involved some figuring.

Solution to Part 3:

The letter map is, as established in part two:

c = o
g = e
h = t
k = i
l = w
n = a
s = m
u = r
y = f

That generates this:

(2,9) = w
(3,3) = a
(4,1) = f
(4,5) = o
(6,1) = o
(7,7) = r
(8,5) = w
(8,9) = m

In each matched pair, the first number indicates a nine-cell area in the grid, and the areas are numbered like this:

123
456
789

The second number indicates a cell in this area, and the cells are numbered the same way.

I chose this system not really as a puzzle but as my favorite in the sudoku domain. Partially by design and partially by luck, the next two most obvious systems (the ones using two axes and having either top left or bottom left as the as the origin at (1,1)) are directly rendered invalid by conflicts with existing cells. I hoped this fact would lead to the third option, the correct one, by virtue of it being a system that allows the grid to be filled in at all, and that filling it thusly leads to a valid sudoku.

Part 4: Cryptogram

(5,5)(5,9)(9,1) (5,9)(2,3)(4,7), (1,5)(5,5)(9,9)(6,3)(9,1)

(1,1)(6,3) (5,9)(5,5) (3,3) (5,5)(3,3)(2,3)(8,7)
(4,1)(4,5)(7,7) (1,6)(6,1) (2,2)(8,7)(6,3)(8,2)
(6,8)(6,1)(9,1) (3,7)(5,9) (7,7)(1,9)(8,9)(8,7)
(3,6)(6,3) (3,6)(8,7)(6,6)(6,3) (7,5)(2,5) (3,6)(3,3)(8,8)(6,5)
(6,8)(2,5)(6,6)(1,5) (9,3)(8,7)(9,9)(1,5)(4,1)(6,6)(3,3)(1,4)(6,3)
(7,9)(3,9) (4,7)(7,2)(6,4)(7,4)

This is another verse built from the nine available letters. All you have to do is fill in letters from the solved sudoku. I realized with all four parts going out that this verse could be solved before the sudoku was and used to backfill into the grid. I tried to facilitate this, in case the sudoku was giving anyone trouble. The title and first line come directly from the givens, but as you go down the verse, the coordinates begin to come from later in the sudoku solution, where possible. There are some coordinates in the last line that, if backfilled, make all advanced sudoku solving techniques unnecessary.

1605 Eternal Density Seven OTTish Words Use the following letter groups to make OTTish words:

HO IK INE PU AW ES LPI NS ERS TD GRA MO OG NE VE AL LE PA EA NTH PEV ED

Each letter group is used exactly once. So if you use LE and ED to make LEED, you can't also use HO and ED to make HOED since that uses ED twice and there's only one ED available.
The letters in the groups are in the correct order. So you could use LE and ED to make LEED, but you can't use HO and ES to make HOSE.
